Apple has announced it will launch the next generation of iPad on 2 March, hot on the heels of a recent refresh of the MacBook Pro range. It was obvious that the iPad would be a hit, and I nailed my colours firmly to the mast not long after Steve Jobs publicly launched it.
There were those who had criticisms of the iPad when it launched, and at the time I thought that those criticisms would be dealt with, and it seems like with this release, just over 13 months after the original unveiling, the original critics will have to find something else wrong with the iPad.
Current rumours include:
- iPad 2 may have both a front and rear facing camera – something which I felt was missing originally. The addition of at least one camera is a must and will mean the iPad will be able to FaceTime with the iPhone.
- Expect the iPad to be both lighter and thinner – this is Apple we are dealing with here.
- Possibly a new retina display, just like the iPhone 4.
- Expect upgraded processor and memory capacity. Every other key player has followed Apple into the tablet market, so if Apple want to stay fresh, they have to stay a step ahead just as new tablets are coming onto the market.
- Perhaps a USB or an SD card slot, or perhaps both, or perhaps none – hey don’t blame me, these are rumours!
- Perhaps a white case.
As is always the case with Apple, there can be a lot of truth in many of the rumours floating around, but also, a lot of misleading waffle. Hopefully I’ve given you some insight into the most likely directions for the iPad. Steve Jobs occasionally saves something up his sleeve that nobody saw coming, so it’s worth keeping up-to-date on iPad 2 release news to see if this particular platform will get closer to serving your needs.
